Description: THE WOODCUTS of JACOB STEINHARDT Edited By LEON KOLB Oversized Hardcover Illustrated Edition, 446 pp. with gilt-embossed blue cloth boards, and price intact dust jacket. The Woodcuts collection of works by the renowned German-Jewish artist Jakob Steinhardt, edited by Leon Kolb, published as a limited First Edition in 1959, by The Jewish Publication Society of America in Philadelphia, in 1962. Jacob Steinhardt ((1887–1968) was well-known for his woodcuts, which often depicted biblical and Jewish themes, as well as scenes from Jewish life and culture. His artwork is characterized by its expressive style, combining elements of German Expressionism with a deep spiritual and emotional intensity. From 1908 to 1910 he traveled to Paris, where he associated with Henri Matisse and Theophile Steinlen. He participated in the New Sezession and founded the Pathetiker Group. After moving to Israel, Steinhardt opened an art school in Jerusalem in 1934. In 1948 he closed the art school and became Chairman of the Graphics Department at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. From 1954-57 he was the Director. The book is clean inside, the binding is tight, no damage to the spine, no tears, has a light yellowing to the edges. The dust jacket is slightly shelfworn, partially slightly yellowed, has one inch thoroughly repaired closed tear to the front upper corner, and a few mm to the top of spine, features high-quality reproductions of Steinhardt's woodcuts, along with commentary and analysis that provide insight into his artistic vision and techniques. The book not only celebrates his mastery of woodcut art but also reflects the social and historical context in which Steinhardt lived and worked, particularly his experience as a Jewish artist in Germany and Israel. The book serves as both an artistic tribute and a historical record, showcasing how Steinhardt's personal experiences and Jewish identity shaped his art. . *Service 24/7.
