Having hugely successful and sometimes outstanding results from north to south, from big baron pits to silty estate lakes, any type of bait concept or presentation, it didn’t seem to matter, the Viper Rig seemed to do the business no matter, often out fishing other rigs ten fold. Ever been on feeding fish and not had even a sniff? Ever really wondered why, well this could be the difference, or at least something new to try. Last year’s concept of the viper rig “kit” format, proved that for the quick and able that jumped on this, great rewards were offered and the word began to spread to the lucky mates and the inquisitive. This cheap and creative solution to this puzzle that is our lifestyle was now living. One year later, It seemed apparent that a pre tied rig was inevitable and called for by many anglers. Either, poor eye sight, too fiddly or plan and simple “I can’t be assed” brought me to one promise. So this is my pleasure to bring to the long awaited market, the pre tied Viper Rig. These rigs are hand made in the Uk, by yours truly, using parts sourced from the Uk from reputable companies, the Viper arm itself is manufactured in the Uk. This is an important part of my company’s ethics not really for any particular reason but if this is the birthplace of carp fishing then let’s at least honour that (for now anyway) Each rig is tied and finished as if one of my own and one I would gladly use, if it’s not perfect, it won’t go out!! It’s as simple as that. The ingredients used are also second to none, these are combined differently to produce the best affects for each rig. ie, small baits-supple hook link, big fish near snags- bigger hook with heavy link, stalking or bags- short and supple, long chuck-stiff boom or naked, the choice is endless. Ingredient list. Hooks. - Fox, Stiff Rigged Beaked. - Fox, Stiff Rigged Beaked, barbless. (8s only) - Drennan continental boilie. Hook links. -Korda, N-trap. -Gardener, Trick link. -Fox, Coretex. Boom. -Korda, boom. -Amnesia, silt black. So the Viper rig,, having seen it with my own eyes and now countless tank tests. it’s almost become plainly visible that the hooks on most modern day rigs, are not rotating as effectively as once believed. This seems to be due to the presence of the knot that’s used to attach the hook to the hook link. Once the two elements were combined they almost become one meaning that the hook would only rotate as far as the suppleness of the hook link would allow. The stronger the hook link, the worse the rotation seemed to be. I tried everything, all manner of rigs together with all types of hook links, yet the results were not too dissimilar. Even tank testing super soft braids, only cemented my theory that under water pressure alone (suction.) they tested very poorly,,, and don’t get me started on that one with the swivel!!! Joke rig. So the knot had to go,,, and it did, and that in turn created the Viper rig. A free spinning, unattached hook system that not only continues to back up these claims but interestingly is now bringing new ideas and methods to the table, people are tweaking the system to great effect and more importantly, a growing confidence,,,, a one off rig that dose it all?? I’d say, it’s pretty bloody close! As you can see, once you remove the knot you can now create a system that allows the hook to rotate 360 degrees at any given moment with ridiculous speed. So in theory, you don’t need the knot during presentation, that was its hindrance, you only need the strength of a knot during battle and at no other time! So I put the knot inside the bait, sounds crazy but once you get your head around it it makes complete sense. Fish comes in, gets nicked in the bottom lip, bolts off, hook rides up to knot pushing the bait off the line, leaving the knot originally inside the bait now tight against the back of the eye of the hook. the knot’s thickness and strength will guarantee it won’t pass through the eye of the hook and there’s your strong point, there’s your knot. (Picture 4.) For additional security I’ve included a Micro ring within the knot, this should prevent the knot slipping through on itself. Regarding confidence in this knot , I must admit a bit nerve racking at first, but in logical reasoning, if you’re using 20lb hook link it’s still going to be 20lb, the knot is still a knot. In tests, it’s no different to a blood knot, grinner, knotless or any other, our knot is just on the other side of the hook now, same breaking strain, same tension same ability to land a fish, any fish! This unique approach, together with the laws of physics, means that any suction movement on either a bottom bait or pop up will result in the hooks heaviest point rotating towards its lowest point of gravity, meaning bottom lip every time,!!nice and safe, nice and neat, highly effective! This effect of the hook always finding the lowest point of gravity means,,,, and this is important!!! It means that any interference other than suction, will result in the hook almost rotating away from the danger, ie, a tail or peck fin, the result being that foul hooking a fish should now be fully avoided!! (Picture 5.) Yet another unique advantage is the rigs Machanics, allowing the angler to change the height of the hook at any given moment to suit any bait change, without changing the rig (picture 1) Also, for the first time ever, you can now control the hook’s aggressiveness at any time by sliding the Viper arm up and down the shaft of the hook to suit a desired bait size and shape or even to vary the speed of rotation (picture 2.) Another advantage is if the angler needs to change to a larger bait, or a snowman approach then simply tie some floss to the ring without distorting the rig in any way (picture 3.) This one unique system can be used with any chosen hook bait, hook link or set up desired and can be adapted to suit any situation. So my aim was to make this rig available for everyone and this is all,.kids especially, found the original kit format a little tricky, also the mature people that may have issues with fiddly micro rings and such, my aim was to make it available for all. By no means am I trying to match or take on the big boys so a very down to earth approach has been taken. So products will need to be steamed ( especially booms) on the coated variety you will notice it doesn’t come with a hinge, this is down to the angler. I think it’s a nice way to leave it then all manner of kicks and lengths can be achieved. Also many come with no end swivel or rings of any sort, this also is left to the angler, I think it makes it easier to attach as there are so many variables now it’s easier to tie onto what you’re used to and already have. Packaging is also pretty basic, I’ve tried massively to stay away from plastics where I can. I use recycled paper envelopes and it’s all pretty much in one pack, once with you, please reuse any old packs you already have or make a little extra room in the tackle box (chuck out your Ronnies) and store pride and place x I think it’s time we moved on from “keep it sharp and simple” “Keep it sharp by all means,,, but don’t keep it simple,,, where’s the fun in that!”😉 So if you do purchase one, please go on YouTube to see what I would recommend to do next, it’s only a guide but it could help. Each link will direct you to what you have purchased. Thanks for your time And tight lines x
