Description: Story Map of Spain by Colortext Publications,Inc., Chicago: 1935 A wonderfully detailed color pictorial map of Spain filled with drawings of historic sites, famous people, landmarks and industries with explanatory captions and illustrations by Julio de Diego. Due to all the historical information listed, the geography is kept simple to regions, provinces, cities, towns, borders with France, Portugal and Africa and the Balearic Islands. The upper and lower portions of the map’s border design features Coat of Arms that represent the provinces and cities, a portrait of Charles I, father of Phillip II with the motto: “The sun never sets in my dominions”. The map’s decorative cartouche (lower right) identifies it as “The Story Map of Spain” with the artist’s name: Julio de Diego (1900-1979) printed right below in small print. The cartouche includes a drawing of an aristocratic couple surrounded by a priest, farmer, fisherman, seaman and maid in vintage dress with a coat of arms at the top. On the lower left is the caption: “Colortext Publications, Inc., Chicago 1935There is much to look at and study from across the centuries: From the invasions of the Moors and Romans, the historic events of rulers, Christopher Columbus voyages, the Spanish Armada in 1588 and a list of famous sieges. Some of the many of the historic landmarks are: Castle Coca, 14,000 year old cave paintings, Roman aqueducts and monuments. There are many famous cathedrals, universities and monasteries as well as famous people such as St. Teresa, El Cid and Don Quixote. The ocean is full of sailing vessels showing Columbus, Juan Sebastian, El Cano, the Romans, etc.Colortext Publications published educational books and pictorial maps in the 1930s. A series of “Story Maps” were published in 1935 and after, including Europe, France, Ireland, Scotland, England and the West Indies. Colortext also published maps of Germany, Italy and Switzerland in this period by the cartographer and illustrator Ernest Dudley Chase. These maps were apparently intended to educate a younger generation of Americans about their heritage. The firm also published illustrated booklets about history for children in connection with the Chicago World's Fair Century of Progress Exhibition in 1933 and 1934. The artist, Julio de Diego was born in Spain in 1900 and emigrated to the United States in the 1920s’ and settled in Chicago circa 1926 where he began exhibiting through the Art Institute of Chicago. He was also did magazine covers, murals and became a teacher. He died in Florida in 1979.Map Condition: The map measures 12 by 15 ½ inches on a sheet size 13 ½ by 17 inches. It was printed on a heavy paper similar to construction paper. The map is in generally fine condition with light toning and wear. There is some water damage on the lower and upper left corner where the original frame was and some waves from possibly being rolled at one point. This map is not as colorful as some that I have seen by Colortext. I believe they produced maps in 4 or 9 color prints. Please study photos carefullly as they are part of my description. This map was an estate sale find from a few years ago so I don’t know the history but when I took them out of their old frames (behind glass) there were old newspapers dated 1947 that were used as a cushion. I also have more Colortext Story Maps dated 1935-1939 in various conditions that I have listed or will be listing. They include: England, France (Sold), Scotland (Sold), Ireland, Germany (Sold), Spain, and West Indies. This map will be mailed securely between cardboard to protect the map. No frame or matte included. This map would make a wonderful decor item to the office, den or library or a great addition to the pictorial map collector. 250031613.79 Thank you for stopping by and happy bidding ~ Check out my other maps!
