Description: The Purple Renoster: A Johannesburg Literary Magazine Issue No 5. Summer 1963.Initially known as the South African Literary Quarterly and later as the Johannesburg Literary Magazine, The Purple Renoster was founded in 1956 by South African novelist, poet and essayist Lionel Abrahams who was one of the most influential figures in South African literature. Its emergence marked the beginning of a golden era of literary magazines in South Africa, an era which lasted for twenty years and heralded the emergence of black poetry and literature during the apartheid era. A significant amount of the magazine's content defied the law and challenged bigotries and prejudices. This particular Issue no 5 was banned by the South African Apartheid government. Other issue numbers (not currently listed) are also available - Nos. 6,7,10, 11, 12.
