The Anglo-Saxon heritage in these mountains is noted for its personal formof family group singing tradition, which by instinct retains much ofits homemade flavor. The mountains of Southeastern Kentucky areno exception; it was here that A. L. and Kathleen Helton Phippswere quite naturally destined to carry on this tradition. Both werereared with strict guidance of Christian parents. A. L.’s father, aBaptist Minister, took an active part in singing at all religiousgatherings, once so very popular in rural areas before the days ofradio. In the late 20’s A. L. joined his father and other membersof the Phipps Family (PHIPPS QUARTET) to sing at churches, conventions, and other public gatherings. It was in the mid 30’swhen A. L. Phipps found himself to be a natural born musician; hisfavorite instrument of course was the guitar. He was inspired by theold time artists, especially the Carter Family; and it was naturalfor him to pick and sing the Carter Family style of music. In the same valley, was Kathleen Helton Phipps, a quite good-natured girl who had no brothers or sisters to raise a ruckus with. So, she helped her father and mother on the farm, and in her sparetime joined in with her mother who sang the old style family songs.Although Kathleen owned a fiddle from early childhood days, she chose a guitar as the instrument she liked best to accompanyher singing. While playing and singing on a special occasion at aneighbor’s home, it so happened that A. L. Phipps was invited tobring along his guitar and join Kathleen in this performance. Soonafter this they were married and settled in the valley. It was onlynatural for them to develop their singing heritage and soon, throughthe medium of radio and other performances they got the attentionof the recording companies. They were brought to their studios torecord and were on their way to become national and internationalrecording stars. The Phipps Family’s children became links in thechain of tradition; Helen, Leemon, and Bolon have thus far recordedwith the Family and by this time the Phipps Family are well knownto all of the English speaking nations of the world. One of America’s greatest heritages is the old time Gospel songsthat have been handed down from generation to generation. This hasbeen made possible by many country recording artists. One among thisnumber is Carl Story; he has the ability to play and sing these songsin the original way.Carl Story who hails from the Carolina Mountains, formed a groupabout twenty years ago. Their name is, Carl Story and His RamblingMountaineers. This group was noted as one of the tops on the WNOXMid-Day Merry Go-Round. They appeared on many radio stationsand TV shows. Two of the most outstanding recordings by Carl Story, “Light atthe River,” and “Mighty Close to Heaven, ’ have been included in thisalbum. It is their hope and sincere desire that these recordings willbring joy and a spiritual up-lift to all listeners. The Carter Family dates back to August 1, 1927, when A. P., Sara, and Mabelle Carter made their first recordings in their home townBristol, Tennessee. The Carter family became one of the most out-stand recording stars throughout all the English-speaking World. They recorded many songs through the years including 1941, andat that time the Carter Family retired for about 15 years. On April20, 1956, in Bristol, Tennessee, and in the same old brick building, there was a reunion of the Carter Family and the recording worldknew them once more. This time the group included A. P. Carter.Sara, their son Joe, and daughter Jeanette. This get-together andrecording session began a new series of wonderful recordings. Thiswas their last recording session before A. P. Carter died. We think, that they were the best. That’s why the Pine Mountain RecordingCompany included two of the very best recordings of this session,“Death Is Only A Dream,” and “Farther On.”Alton and Rabon, the Delmore Brothers, were bom in Elkmont,Alabama. They got their first start in music when their friends andneighbors began to notice their unusual style of music. Their won-derful harmony which was performed as a duet was accompanied byAlton Delmore on the lead tenor guitar, and Rabon who secondedwith a Spanish guitar. This was just the beginning of a great musicalcareer for the Delmore Brothers. They attended fiddling contests, entertained at schools and per-formed on various occasions. An astonishing thing about the DelmoreBrothers is that in 1931 they stood before a microphone and recordedfor Columbia Records even before they had performed for a largeaudience or for a radio station. It was after this that they appearedon WSM’s Grand Ole Opry. They became famous radio stars andappeared regularly on the Opry during the 1930’s as a duet. In the1940’s the Brothers joined two gospel singers and named their groupthe Brown's Ferry Four. They began to write and record gospelmusic. Both Brothers wrote a number of compositions. This groupfast became the leading Male Quartet in the country. The name of the Brown’s Ferry’ Four is unknown on the recordingsincluded in this album, but it is known that Alton Delmore is one ofthe performers and possibly Rabon. For free and complete listings of other Country and Gospel Records by the Phipps Family, write toPINE MOUNTAIN RECORDS, P.
