Description: Full Title: The Illustrated American Stage: A Pictorial Review of the Most Notable Recent Theatrical Successes, Together with Many Drawings and Portraits of Celebrated Players Condition Continued: There is also a white strip of reinforcement at the juncture between the half-title page and the title page. And some of the paper at the juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper has come unglued revealing the webbing beneath. However, both covers are quite solidly bound. The detached front end paper has a penned inscription. It reads 'To Susie-- You are my illustrated stage-- Love Bill.' There's also a signed name just off the top edge of the half-title page. I also saw a penciled name beside one of the illustrations. I think it says Miss Ellisen. Those are the only instances of writing to be found in the book. There is a gold bookplate off the bottom edge of the front inside cover. It has the name 'Berends' printed on it along with a rear view of two bears with their heads turned back toward the viewer. The bookplate is in good shape, no tears or soiling. That's the only attachment to be found anywhere in the book. The pages are in generally very decent condition. I would describe them as being very clean. I saw only perhaps a half dozen or so of small spots. I did see seven consecutive pages with small tears just off their bottom edge at the juncture between the pages, none coming anywhere near the photographs or illustrations. I saw two other individual pages with very tiny tears off the bottom edge. There is some creasing, not a great deal, the last 10 or so pages have a very light small crease just off their bottom corner. Four or five consecutive tips of top corners have a little crease. Seven or eight consecutive bottom corners have a crease from a bump. Two others as well, one with a small tear. Again, none of these come anywhere near the illustrations or photographs. There are no markings in the book. That pretty much covers it. In the case of this book my sense of obligation to communicate all imperfections may leave a somewhat inaccurate sense of the condition of the interior of the book. So I'll just add that the book, despite its age, is not the least bit decrepit. In fact, it has a very solid feeling to it, and the thick glossy pages are fairly bright, and all the illustrations and photographs are in excellent condition. R.H. Russell, New York, 1901. Hardcover. Introductory paragraph by theatrical producer Charles Frohman. First Edition (SD). The introductory paragraph reads 'This volume, preserving as it does in elegant manner and form the great scenes which the foremost players of our time have touched with the power and splendor of their genius, will confer some degree of permanency upon the fame their triumphs have brought them.' Nice thought.
