Description: "The First-Night Gilbert and Sullivan" presents the definitive editions of all fourteen operas' librettos, edited by Reginald Allen, who contributes a general prologue and introductions and postscripts for each libretto. Bridget D'Oyly Carte provides a foreword. Eugene Ettenberg designed the book, which includes two hundred illustrations from contemporary sources. The page size is 8.5 x 12 inches, with a total of 488 pages. The text is in Times Roman in various sizes, and the libretto titles are set in a variety of Victorian display types. The composition was done by John Stone in Brattleboro, Vermont. Text and illustrations are printed by The Gallery Press of New York on Bethany paper specially manufactured for this edition by the Curtis Paper Company of Newark, Delaware. The book is half-bound in red velvet, with the front and back covers in dark green linen, gold-stamped with a conventional Victorian pattern. The main volume is accompanied by a board portfolio containing facsimiles of the opening-night programs. Both the book and portfolio are enclosed in a slipcase covered with gold paper and edged with green linen.
