The book is titled as follows: THE EMERGENCE OF LINCOLN - VOLUME II - PROLOGUE TO CIVIL WAR 1859-1861 by ALLAN NEVINS Below are pictures showing the list of titles and list of illustrations in book and information on the author of the book Allan Nevins: Joseph Allan Nevins (May 20, 1890 – March 5, 1971) was an American historian and journalist, known for his extensive work on the history of the Civil War and his biographies of such figures as Grover Cleveland, Hamilton Fish, Henry Ford, and John D. Rockefeller, as well as his public service. He was a leading exponent of business history and oral history. I have copied the first pages of Chapters 1 and 2. Below I have typed the first page of Chapter 5 Titled SLAVERY IN A WORLD SETTING: In the summer of 1860, Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, former judge, author, and head of South Carolina College, drove to Somerset House in London, scene of the Fourth International Statistical Congress, to which Secretary Cobb had appointed him a delegate. The American Minister, Dallas, was present. They had just applauded Prince Albert’s opening address when a voice abruptly addressed the chair. Lord Brougham was saying in an ironical tone that as a veteran reformer he wished to call the attention of Mr. Dallas to the fact that one delegate was a Negro, Dr. Delany, born in the United States but now a resident of Canada. As the audience clapped, Delany got up, thanked Brougham, and begged to assure the congress that he was a man. There upon, as Dallas glowed, Longstreet stalked out of the assemble with affronted dignity. A great commotion followed. The venerable Brougham, wishing to soothe Dallas’s feelings, called on the minister but was turned from his door. Lord Lansdowne, for the government, tendered regrets. The greatest reformer of all, Lord Shaftesbury, wrote that Brougham’s conduct had been foolish and unwarranted . Though friends urged Longstreet to return to the congress, he sternly refused. Before leaving London, he not only sent Cobb a long letter of explanation ut published in the Morning Chronicle a paper upholding slavery and pouring out against the free society of Britain the same arguments that Southerners often used against the North. The inform eccentric Brougham had offered the American representatives a sad insult; but then the United States was in a sad position before other lands. Note Chapter 5 Continues in book. The Hard Cover book is in very good condition as photos will show. I don’t believe a dustjacket was ever issue with this book. No Dustjacket present. Binding tight, no notes or writing on pages. The book contains 524 clean pages. The book size is 9 ½ x 6 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches. Weight is 1 lb 15 oz. I would consider that the book is in very good condition considering the book is 70+ years old as photos will show. Please view photos for condition. The only detriment to the book is that the exterior of the spine shows some fading most likely from setting in a book shelf for 70 or so years exposed to sunlight as photos will show, also the ends of the pages exterior are not smooth as photo will show. The book in the picture is the one you will receive. I will accept PAYPAL for payment. Items will be shipped US Media Mail usually next day after payment of Paypal, packaging and mail $4.95.
