Description: I'm pleased to offer this very attractive specimen of Tetrahedrite in Quartz with very sparse Chalcopyrite and presumed Aurichalcite from the "Portal prospect", Portal, Cochise County, Arizona. The specimen measures 2.83 x 2.49 x 1.56 inches or 7.18 x 6.42 x 3.98cm. This piece shows dark massive tetrahedrite (with a very few and very tiny crystal faces present) in quartz with very sparse golden chalcopyrite and sky-blue presumed aurichalcite (at 30X to best appreciate). Some of the quartz is very attractively iron-stained a peach-orange color. This really adds to its aesthetics. This was found at a series of mines and dumps near the small community of Portal. The names of the mines and prospects remain unknown and so the original collector labeled this as coming from the "Portal mine". As this is not known and valid name, I'm going to label the specimen as being from the Portal prospect. I find this piece very, very attractive with a great contrast between the dark tetrahedrite and the white quartz. The very colorful iron-stained ribbons really caught my eye and so I picked up this piece along with about a flat of other specimens from the collector. This was the only piece from this locality in my flat. This should be considered a rare locality specimen--I've never before seen specimens from this locality.
