Originally issued in 88 parts between 1838 and 1840, they show in extraordinary detail the elevations of London's main commercial thoroughfares of the time. The LTS dates parts 1-36 as having been issued in 1838, parts 37-79 in 1839 and parts 80-88 in 1840. The Street Views, which served both as a street guide and a trade directory, were clearly devised as an advertising medium. As well as showing detailed elevations of all the houses and other buildings on both sides of each street, each View includes details of many of the businesses trading from the street. Each elevation is accompanied by a map prominently showing the street in relation to its neighbourhood, and a vignette view of either the street itself, a famous building upon it, or a particular shop or business (presumably as a paid advertisement). The accompanying text includes numerous further trade adverts, as well as fascinating descriptions of the character of the street itself and its neighbouring streets.
