Description: APPOINTED THE LAST MAJOR GENERAL OF VOLUNTEERS OF THE UNION ARMY DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, WON THE MEDAL OF HONOR, WAS MILITARY GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA DURING RECONSTRUCTION (DURING WHICH HE OVERSAW THE FREEDMAN’S BUREAU IN ALABAMA AND HELPED ESTABLISH SCHOOLS FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE STATE).WAGER SWAYNE (1834-1902) SIGNED SLIP, “With very sincere regard/Wager Swayne, Col. 5th Inftry., Bvt Maj: Gen’l, USA, Montgomery, Alabama, 21st April 1867”, 7.5 x 4.5, Abraham Lincoln appointed him the last Major General of Volunteers of the Union Army, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Second Battle of Corinth (Oct. 3-4, 1862). At the date of this item he was also the Military Governor of Alabama (March 2, 1867 to July 14, 1868 after the passage of the first Reconstruction Act by the U. S. Congress until Alabama was readmitted to the Union.
