Founded in 1887 (incorporated 1898) by James L. Mead of Chicago, Mead Cycle Co. manufactured and distributed bicycles directly to the bicycle rider through their mail order catalogs and ads. The Ranger Brand was introduced in the mid-1890’s with their motto, “The Ranger is Above Compare and Good Enough for a Millionaire”. Mead took a unique approach to selling its bicycles by developing a network of ‘Rider Agents’ in cities and towns across the Midwest who could purchase their Mead bicycles at nearly half price in exchange for distributing sales literature and assisting their co-workers, friends, & classmates in placing their bicycle and parts orders. Mead was one of only 12 bicycle manufacturers (out of nearly 300 companies) who survived the late 1890’s and early 1900’s as a result of plummeting sales due to the introduction of the motorized vehicles – motorcycles and motor cars/automobiles.
