You may, of course, polish it if you prefer: It is a question of preference.Purchased in the south of France in 1978, it's origins, we were told, are French.In gorgeously-cast brass, depicting Jesus on the cross, surrounded by his twelve apostles.The inscription INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum) is noted over the head of Jesus. This was the inscription carved on the cross after Christ's crucifixion. After Jesus is nailed to the cross, the soldiers "placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews" (Matthew 27:37). Four fleur-de-lis surround Jesus at the four corners of the cross. In Christianity, lilies symbolize purity and chastity, which may be why the fleur-de-lis historically represent the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. The lilies have also come to represent French royalty and in this case, may well represent both.The cross has a cast ring at the top for it to be wall mounted, or it can be placed as desired.Weighing just over 1/2 kilo, this is a substantial piece. Completely and naturally patinaed. Minute and unnoticeable bend to rhs (during casting, this is not damage). Gorgeous carvings are intact.
