This utterly stunning antique hardstone cameo is so tiny, so perfectly formed it seems to defy physical laws. Combining soft realism with inspired renaissance style and adding a natural element conforming to the structure of the stone itself, it's been carved directly along the boundary between colours within a single piece of natural stone. This has created a twisted wave effect across its surface, used by the artist to give the main diagonal of the piece. Each detail is minutely represented - from the curls of Cupid’s hair to the pattern of the butterfly’s wing. His casual reaching stance is the hallmark of a master artist - hardstone is an incredibly difficult material to work with: one small slip of the hand and the whole piece is ruined. The depth of carving and remarkable realism has resulted in little need for forced perspective and the light moves wonderfully across, creating shadow and highlights that grab the eye. He's set into a solid 18 carat gold mount and a slightly later added 18 carat gold ring base with gold backing panel - the cameo from around 1860 and the ring around 1900. It's in incredible condition for its age, with no loss or damage. The diagonal hairline going downwards from right to left is an old inclusion that I believe was there when it was carved, but may have become more visible over the centuries. It exits at a small fissure near his head. It's perfectly stable within the frame and this only adds to its authenticity. The ring is stamped '18ct' to warrant the precious metal content.
