Description: Original Preliminary Costume Sketches/Layout Design Production Art From the Studios of Edith Head As described on the invoice from the originating dealer: “Accomplished in pencil on a 14 in. by 16.75 in. artist’s sheet, featuring 18 (eighteen) variations of evening gowns for an unidentified film feature dated 1953.” UNSIGNED Graphite on paper. PLEASE NOTE: This item was purchased from The Gen’ral Store of Garden Grove, California. The original description labeled the film for which these “preliminary costume sketches” were produced as “UNIDENTIFIED”. My subsequent research suggests to me that the film was Paramount Picture’s “Living It Up” (1953), starring Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Janet Leigh. Included in this lot is an original press photo (7.5 x 9.5, trimmed) of Miss Leigh in a gown that I BELIEVE BUT CANNOT BE CERTAIN was designed from these sketches. The photo bears a snipe which states “JANET LEIGH co-stars with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in Paramount’s “Living It Up.” In the film [Miss Leigh] wears this Edith Head designed evening gown in pale blue. It is made of soufflé over pleated nylon net in shades of blue, mauve and grey with a draped halter neckline. The entire dress is sprinkled with opalescent teardrops.” Dimensions: 14 inches (width) by 16.75 inches (height) Condition: Very Good. Some toning and creasing. Please examine photos carefully and feel free to ask questions.
