Description: A beautifully chased repoussé representation of the Roman goddess Minerva (Athena in Greek mythology) as a stamp seal for wax-sealing documents. Of unknown age, this antique is likely Continental: Italian or French; 19th century (possibly earlier). The impressive quality of materiality suggests a jeweler's artistry. This sculpture itself is clearly inspired by the "Athena Giustiniani", which is based on a Greek bronze sculpture of the late 5th–early 4th century BCE (formerly in the collection of Vincenzo Giustiniani; now in the Vatican Museum, Rome). The detail is just incredible; the craftsmanship sensational; and with a lovely heft to it. This is a rare original artwork, and apparently one-of-a-kind; no other examples are known to exist. Statuette measures approximately 5 inches in height (12.5 cm), and 1 ½ inches broad (4 cm); weight is just over 105 grams. Without hallmarks; however, the metal tests positive for .925 sterling silver, and is apparently solid. Overall condition is very good; however, this is a genuine antique item with signs of age: wear and smoothing; slight nicks, scuffs and scratches; traces of old polish; minor tarnish and corrosion; some small dents to underside of base. Stamp seal surface is blank, ready to accommodate your monogram or device. Altogether, this little treasure presents absolutely beautifully. Elegant and exquisitely made!
