Other: Charles Sumner (1811-1874), American statesman and politician from Massachusetts was known for his inspiring and powerful oratory skills and his leadership in antislavery efforts during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He was severely beaten on the floor of the US Senate by South Caroline Representative Preston Brooks for his efforts to abolitionist views and was a confidant of Abraham Lincoln although he was a leader in the Radical Republicans. The production of Skeleton or Phantom leaves and still-lifes became a popular Victorian pastime in the 1860s and 1870s, often recorded photographically. At least two books were published at the time outlining the process. This particular wreath was registered by I.L. Rogers for copyright in 1874 at the Library of Congress. Rogers made several different Lincoln Memorial Phantom or Skeleton Leaves stereoviews through other publishers as well. John Soule, active from 1860 to about 1880 in the Boston area, is known for his views of the New England region as well as his stereoviews of Yosemite. His brother William was also a noted photographer of this era. Soule sold his interests in the Soule Photographic Company in the 1880s and moved to Seattle, Washington where he was active in the 1880s through 1890s. This is recorded in several genealogical compendiums, although few photo histories seem to acknowledge this link. Send questions. We are currently listing a diverse selection of photography and art.
