In 1910, William H. Fulper II hired Martin Stangl, a ceramic engineer, to develop new shapes and glazes. By 1924 Stangl was vice president of Fulper Pottery and responsible for the development of a solid color dinnerware line. In the 1920s Fulper Pottery built a small plant in Flemington, New Jersey, and acquired a large pottery plant in Trenton. From 1926-1978 all Fulper/Stangl dinnerware production was based at Plant #3 in Trenton. In 1928, Fulper’s first Flemington plant was destroyed by fire. Johann Martin Stangl became president of Fulper Pottery in 1928. A year later Stangl purchased Fulper and continued to produce some pieces under the Fulper trademark until around 1953. In 1935 production ended at the second Flemington plant and the building was converted to a factory outlet, one of the first businesses of this type in America. Stangl’s Flemington Outlet showroom remained in operation until 1978. Stangl Pottery made inexpensive artware, dinnerware, and utilitarian wares. Stangl introduced its hand-carved, hand-painted dinnerware lines. Kay Hackett was one of the artists who help develop this sgraffito technique. Rose Herbeck, designed the Gingerbread line made between 1967 and 1972. At its peak, Stangl dinnerware was sold in over 3,000 department, gift, and jewelry stores. Stangl produced more than 50 dinnerware patterns between 1942 and 1968. Johann Martin Stangl died in 1972. Frank Wheaton, Jr., bought Stangl in 1987 and then sold it to Pflatzgraff Pottery and production was ended.--------------------------Photos are provided as an integral part of the product description and tell an accurate story of condition.
