Sportsman's Park - Wednesday, May 10, 1978 - A Day At The Races

Description: Sportsman's Park - Wednesday, May 10, 1978 - A Day At The Races Sportsman’s ParkStarted its racing life around 1927 or 1928 as a dog track owned by Al Capone and Eddie O’Hare. Dog racing was illegal in Illinois, and the track closed the following year. In 1932, thoroughbred racing came to the track, and 1949 harness racing was up and running. The home of the Illinois Derby, the race track was expanded to 5/8th of a mile, and the track (originally a 1/2 mile track) was like running on a bull ring track. The clubhouse turn was where many horses “blew” the turn and had no chance. Jockeys like Ray Sibille, Pat Day, and Russell Baze knew how to handle the turn. The Grand Circuit would make stops here. The harness racing was some of the best in the nation. However, the owner decided to change in the 1990s, tore down the place, and built a combination motor speedway and horse race track. The track reopened in 1992, and it was a disaster for thoroughbred racing; the racing surface was as hard as a rock, and many accidents happened. After spending more than 70 million dollars on this dump, it closed in 2002. Today, a Walmart and a liquor distributor warehouse are on the site. If you make multiple purchases, the shipping cost will be corrected, and I will refund you the balance. I greatly appreciate your interest in what I am selling.
