VOLUME TAKEN FROM THE CAPTURED SPANISH CARGO SHIP RITA AND ACCOMPANIED WITH PROVENANCE HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED BY GENERAL JOHN BIDDLE Provenance handwritten and signed by General John Biddle (1859-1936) on the front free endpaper: “Taken from Captain’s room on Spanish Steamer ‘Rita,’ which was captured by U.S. Cruiser ‘Yale.’ Presented to Miss Mary F. Demoville by Lt. Col. John Biddle, U.S. Army - Oct. 24th, 1898.” Biddle later served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy and US Army Chief of Staff during World War I.
