Description: VERY GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a super edition entitled “To the Holy Shrines,” by Sir Richard Burton (1821-1890). It was published by Penguin Books Ltd., of Harmondsworth, Middlesex, in 2007 and is one of the wonderful “Penguin Great Journeys” series, No. 10 (first printing in this edition with “1” under the publication details). English explorer, linguist, and orientalist Sir Richard Francis Burton’s life spanned the central years of Queen Victoria’s reign and reflected both the promise and the failings of that glorious age. Best known for his translations of works such as “The Arabian Nights” and Eastern erotica as including “The Kama Sutra”, he was in the vanguard of that age of individual exploration which saw such figures as David Livingstone and Henry Stanley march into darkest Africa with the force of empire in their wake. In 1842 he joined the service of the East India Company and, while stationed in India, acquired a thorough knowledge of the Persian, Afghan, Hindustani, and Arabic languages. In 1853, in various disguises, he made a famous journey to Mecca and Medina, about which he wrote the vivid Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Meccah. With John Hanning Speke he went to uncharted East Central Africa to discover the source of the Nile; he found Lake Tanganyika (1858) but abandoned the attempt to reach Lake Nyasa. This book tells the following story: “It is 1853 in the bustling port of Alexandria. Intent on reaching Mecca, a destination banned to all non-Muslims, Sir Richard Burton disguised himself as a Persian dervish. But when his companions begin to suspect he may not be all that he seems, he realizes he must do all he can to avoid discovery. He battles with Maghrebis on the Red Sea, risks a drinking bout with an Albanian cutthroat and has endless ruses to stay alive in this unique pilgrimage through the Arab world.” The book measures 7.25 inches x 4.5 inches. The 106 pages are nice and neat. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. A wonderful edition.
