Description: This is an Austin Production sculpture reproduction of the famous sculpture by Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) artist, who was a German Expressionist Sculptor, printmaker, and writer.Early in Ernst Barlach 's career, He trained with French artists and produced traditional Art Nouveau-styled sculpture and works on paper, but with little commercial success.It was only after a formative trip to Russia where the artist began creating figurative sculptures inspired by early Gothic art, carving spiritual and emotional themes from hardwood and bronze cast, that he began achieving widespread critical acclaim. Following two years in the trenches in the Gereman army during World War I, The harsh realities of war compelled him to change direction and pacifist art caused Barlach to be listed as one of the Nazi party's degenerate artists. This piece is one of his best known and called "Der Sigende Mann" (The Singing Man) the original sculptured in 1928. This edition of Brach's The Singing Man by Austin Productions must have been produced in very limited numbers as I cannot find any recent sales records. This Reproduction by Austin Production was issued some time in the 1960's or 1970's when Modernism and Expressionist sculpture become popular again.
