Description: Studies in Hysteria by Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer. Published by Basic Books, New York. 1957. First Edition Thus, First Printing. Hardcover with dust cover. Black Cloth Stamped In Brown And Gilt. Studies in Hysteria, co-authored by Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer, is a 1895 compilation of five case studies on the origin of hysteria, along with supporting theoretical discussions of psychopathology and therapy of hysteria. The most significant case in the book is perhaps the case of Anna O (Bertha Pappenheim) who was diagnosed with hysteria and treated by Breuer between 1880 and 1882. The name Anna O. stands for the “alpha and omega of neurosis,” or as might be written today, “Neurosis from A to Z.” Breuer’s treatment of Pappenheim eventually led to a theory of hysteria, a new method of psychological treatment, and the germ of a new way of thinking about personality and the mind – Freudian (Classical) psychoanalysis – that would have a major impact on our thinking about human nature. This classic work on psychoanalysis is a must read for anyone interested in Freud and Breuer's pioneering work in the treatment of hysteria.
