Description: THE SHIELDING SHADOW, Chapter #5 "Through Bolted Doors", Starring Grace Diamond, RARE now lost silent serial Lobby Card Director: Louis J. Gasnier Starring: Grace Diamond, Ralph Kellard, Leon Barry, Madlaine Traverse, Lionel Braham, Frankie Mann, Leslie King Description: Vintage, 8" x 10" lobby card from the now lost silent Astra Film Corp/Pathé Exchange adventure film serial THE SHIELDING SHADOW, a 15-episode series - 10 chapters of which are considered lost. This card is from one of the lost chapters. The serial, produced by New Jersey-based Astra Film Corp, stars GRACE DIAMOND and RALPH KELLARD. Ms. Diamond's film career ran from 1914-1927, and although she never became a household name, she did work on the first failed Technicolor film THE GULF BETWEEN (1917) and with Boris Karloff on THE HOPE DIAMOND MYSTERY (1921). In Hollywood circles, she was known as a bisexual-lesbian who fell in love with Jean Acker, the estranged wife of screen legend Rudolph Valentino. The inner-title on this rare lobby card states LEONTINE AT BAY. I have attached 3 extra photos to this listing's description that are advertisements from the film (these ads are not part of the auction - only the lobby card.) From the 1916 Motion Picture World trade magazine, here is a description of THE SHIELDING SHADOW Episode 5, "Through Bolted Doors": Leontine, to secure One Lamp Louie's written confession of a forgery, which has unjustly sent Jerry Carson to prison and later to his death, contrives to enter a closely guarded gambling house, where Ramanoff, a master crook, who has stolen the paper, is consulting with Bianca, a Queen of Blackmailers, concerning its value. Within is a "hidden house," the only entrance to which is through a secret panel. Leontine, pretending she has fainted, is carried into the secret chamber by a servant. On the other side of the wall she finds herself before the beautiful Bianca surrounded by her band of gentlemen crooks, and is astounded to discover her husband, Sebastian, who is bargaining for the paper, the disclosure of which would implicate him. The tense scene suddenly has an invisible intervention. The paper is mysteriously snatched from Bianca by an unseen force, and Leontine finds it in her own hand. One by one the crooks, who attempt to seize it from her, are knocked down by a powerful invisible antagonist. Sebastian, fighting with the unseen foe, is felled by a vase which rising in the air hurls itself at him. Step by step to the door Leontine is shielded by her unseen defender and escapes. After a fight she pauses breathlessly beneath a street lamp and begins reading. Suddenly it is snatched from her by One Lamp Louie, who has followed her. Note: During the early silent years of cinema, 8" x 10" lobby cards were often released with color or duo-tone printing on thick stock.
