SGC 3 - 1940 Play Ball # 21 Rick Ferrell Washington Senators HOF

Description: An SGC graded VG 3 - 1940 Play Ball card of Hall of Famer Rick Ferrell of the Washington Senators. Ferrell also played for the St. Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox. 1940 Play Ball set features 240 different cards highlighting active players of the day as well as many retired baseball greats. The set includes many Hall of Fame players and even a card of the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox. Card numbers 121-180 can be found with two different ads at the bottom on card backs. The first advertises the Play Ball Baseball series, while the other advertises the SUPERMAN set that was yet to be released. Some collectors are willing to pay a small premium for the cards featuring the SUPERMAN ads on the back, but most of the major price guides do not mention different values. This example has no creasing, bold printing, nice focus, good centering and clean borders. The corners are consistent with those found on most VG+/VGEX examples. The printing on the front is shifted just slightly to the right, but the card still displays well. There is a very light diagonal indentation (approx. 1/2" long) that extends from near the upper left portion of the player's cap to the top edge. It is visible when the card is tilted carefully to the light, but it does not detract too much from the overall eye appeal of the card. There is some toning on both sides (not uncommon with 1940 Play Ball cards). Aside from the toning, the back is fairly clean with bold printing. Even with the flaws, this is still a nice looking card for the grade that would not look out of place in an SGC 3.5 holder.
