In 2001, Sete joined the Telefonica Movistar Suzuki Team riding a 500 RGV Suzuki and won his first 500cc GP race in Valencia. In 2002, he rode the new Four-Stroke Suzuki MotoGP bike with teammate Kenny Roberts Jr. In 2003, Sete rode a Honda RC211V for the Telefonica Moviestar Honda Team. He finished 2nd in the MotoGP World Championships behind Valentino Rossi. He won 4 races, and finished on the podium 10 out of 16 races. He even qualified on pole 1 time in the South African GP at Welkom. It was the next race after his teammate Daijiro Kato #74 passed away in an racing crash at Suzuka, Japan. Sete won that race! In 2004, Sete is the newest talent this year challenging Rossi for the Championship. Sete's teammate is Colin Edwards #45.
