Description: Squarings: A Sequence of Forty-Eight Poems, with Prospectus and Booklet Seamus Heaney and The Grounds of Hope Author: Heaney, Seamus; LeWitt, Sol (Illust.); Vendler, Helen (Intro.) Title: Squarings: A Sequence of Forty-Eight Poems, with Prospectus and Booklet Seamus Heaney and The Grounds of Hope Publication: San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2003 Edition: Limited Edition Description: Hardcover. This sequence of 48 poems, each made of four tercets and squarish in shape, by Seamus Heaney and 48 drawings, each six inches square, by Sol LeWitt, a key figure in the Minimal and Conceptual art movements, accompanied by the publisher's prospectus and an additional booklet entitled Seamus Heaney and The Grounds of Hope by Helen Vendler, who also introduces this edition, is here letterpress printed on Pescia, a mould-made sheet from the Magnani Mill in Italy, in an edition limited to 400 numbered and 26 lettered copies, this being number 262, with each signed by the late Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) and artist Sol LeWitt (1928-2007). Of Squarings, preceded by the death of Heaney's parents, Helen Vendler writes, "When the parental roof vanishes and the fire in the hearth goes out, the son has no choice, as he stands, a shivering beggar, but to construct in this unroofed scope an unprecedented way of seeing things. The Pains and joys of that difficult construction pervade these four groups of twelve twelve-line poems. The geometrical symmetry of their form and the mathematical neatness of their grouping suggest the equilibrium of mind and heart, however altered, that the stricken poet seeks to find and inhabit by balancing time and stillness, mourning and joy." Of the 48 drawings by Sol LeWitt to accompany Heaney's 48 poems, Heaney wrote to the publisher: "When they combine with the Deepdene pages [the type of this handset, letterpress edition], we'll have settings and lightenings and crossings and squarings as we've never had before." —ProspectusEdition limited to 400 numbered copies for sale and 26 lettered copies for complimentary distribution, this being number 262, with each copy signed by Seamus Heaney and Sol LeWitt. 11 1/8" X 10 3/8". [126pp]. Bound in full gray cloth over boards, bearing a design that is an enlarged reference to the straight and curved lines underling the LeWitt drawings, in a darker gray cloth slipcase. A hint of shelfwear to bottom edge of slipcase, some faint dust soiling to cloth of slipcase, and perhaps a bare whiff of cigar smoke to pages, else fine. Accompanied by the prospectus as well as a 20pp booklet entitled Seamus Heaney and The Grounds of Hope by Helen Vendler, published by Arion Press in 2004. This is the 67th publication of The Arion Press. Near fine.
