Here we are offering an original 1986 Cuban poster, designed to demonstrate Cuba's solidarity with South Africa and the anti-apartheid movement. The poster features anti-apartheid crusader OLOF PALME, a former prime minister of Sweden who was assassinated in Stockholm in early 1986. This poster -- designed and printed in the months after Palme's death -- offers a quote from the often fiery and controversial Swedish politican: "Apartheid cannot be reformed, it has to be elminated." This offset poster was printed by the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa & Latin America (OSPAAAL), which was founded in 1966 to demonstrate solidarity among socialist countries and promote various independence movements and other causes, including civil rights. As was the custom with many OSPAAAL posters, the words on this 1986 graphic are offered in multiple languages -- in this case, Spanish, English and French. OSPAAAL closed its doors in June 2019 after a long run as a publisher of imaginative Cuban poster art. OSPAAAL posters can be found in museum and gallery collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum's in London and the Library of Congress' in Washington D.C.
