This 1999 calendar published by Shinkyo Shuppansha, and printed in Japan on what I believe to be a heavy Awagami paper, features the 1960 Kappazari stencil print "I Am The True Vine" # 11/50 created and signed 1960 by Sadao Watanabe. This is a very limited authorized and very high quality reissue of this exceptional original stencil print #11/50. I cannot begin to capture the story of Watanabe's life. Born 1913, baptized Christian 1930, his encounter with and artistic influence under Keisuke Serizawa, his mastery of the Kappazuri stencil art, and the long history of worldwide juries and awards placing his work in the finest collections from The Vatican, to New York, to Japan, and all points in between. The art stencil block measures 27cm x 34cm and the full sheet size is 42cm x 59cm which would be 16-1/2" x 23-1/4". Again, this work is encased in its original cellophane protective wrapper to remain virtually flawless. It can certainly be framed fully intact even if one wanted to expose only the I Am The True Vine stencil art. You could certainly include an excerpt from the Gospel of John from which Watanabe pulled his own influence for the work below the stencil. In any case it is an exceptional value and art form.
