It was an important map because of its influence on the European perceptions of America. When the map was first published by Abraham Ortelius at Antwerp in 1570, it was the best map of the Americas available. It was in fact the first of its kind to achieve-wide circulation through an atlas. Lower California is correctly shown as a peninsula and America is separated from Asia in the north west. This print depicts the map in its 1590 edition. ---Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a cartographer, geographer, and cosmographer from Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands. He is recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the World), 1570. --- The vintage 1965 print offered here depicts the 1587 map of "The New World" by Ortelius as it appeared in his 1590 Antwerp edition.
