Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Vintage Historical Map Print Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Very clean...very good rendition of an historical map...Vibrant colors A vintage 1965 print (illustration) depicting: ยท Map of the New World, 1587, Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum orbis terrarum, as it appeared in his 1590 edition The map in this illustration shows Ortelius' map depicting the western hemisphere, showing the prominent bulge in the South American coastline. It was an important map because of its influence on the European perceptions of America. When the map was first published by Abraham Ortelius at Antwerp in 1570, it was the best map of the Americas available. It was in fact the first of its kind to achieve-wide circulation through an atlas. Lower California is correctly shown as a peninsula and America is separated from Asia in the north west. This print depicts the map in its 1590 edition. ---Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) was a cartographer, geographer, and cosmographer from Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands. He is recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the World), 1570. --- The vintage 1965 print offered here depicts the 1587 map of "The New World" by Ortelius as it appeared in his 1590 Antwerp edition. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
