Description: What became the state of Vermont was first explored by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain, giving it the name, Verd Mont (Green Mountain) which became Vermont ca 1760. British settlement started in 1724 with the construction of Fort Dummer. The 1763 Treaty of Paris gave control of the whole region to the British. In the 28 years from 1763 to 1791, the population of Vermont rose from 300 to 85,000. In 1791, Vermont joined the federal Union as the fourteenth state. Vermont had a unicameral legislature until 1836 when they added a senate by constitutional amendment. It is known as the “General Assembly and consists of a 150-member Vermont House of Representative and the 30-member Vermont Senate. This is a Real Photo of the Vermont Legislature of 1910, published by ‘H.E. Cutler”. Harry E. Cutler, photographer, had a studio and was active in Barre,Vermont and Keene New Hampshire. He first appears working as a photographer on the 1900 Federal Census. He was born 1865 in Vermont and was still listed on the 1920 census as a photographer in Vermont.
