SONNERIE (STRIKE THE HOURS) WORKING !!!*** This magnificent timepiece was part of the Percy Webster beautiful collection and was previously sold at the famous auction on the 27th of May 1954 at Sotheby's, and the original pictures can be found in the attached catalog !!! This watch was of course his favorite of all the others !!!This is a unique German book timepiece manufactured by Hans Schnier of Speyre, dated 1583 for the King of Hungary Rudolf II. This timepiece represents some of the most impressive and fine craftsmanship of the 16th century. Its a real miracle !!!*** Amazing: With double fusee iron movement !!! The movement with brass plates represents one of the earliest examples ever used of a fusee system in a mantle clock, manufactured just a few years after the fusee was used by Jacob Zech in 1525. The entire wheel train is handmade out of steel, the watch strikes every hour on a bell and, in addition, has an available alarm train !!! This is not amazing ??? !!! The gilded brass dial is fully engraved with floral and romantic motifs. The centre of the dial carries three sets of chapter rings; the first chapter ring shows 24 hours, the second one shows the classic 12 hours and the third one, by turning it clockwise, allows the user to set the alarm. A gilded brass and engraved case beautifully surround the movement. The design of the case and the movement represent an exquisite Renaissance style; the corners of the case are beautifully decorated with gilded brass grotesque masks. The shape of the case is designed to look like a book. The book can be closed and opened by accessing the two clasps on the side. Each side of the book is pierced in the center with a rosette, and the front rosette depicts superbly chased running animals. The book's spine is engraved with the watchmaker's name 'Hans Schnier in Speyre,' and his initials 'HS' in a round scroll together with the city's cathedral, Opera, and the date 1583 when the clock was completed. (it is worth noting that this watch took many years of hard daily work to complete) The movement's back plate is designed in a classic Renaissance style; all the levers and wheels have been beautifully shaped and engraved to achieve an appealing construction. PLEASE NOTE THIS WATCH IS A MUSEUM PIECE AND THE TIMEKEEPING IS NOT ACCURATE, AND IT IS NOT MEANT FOR EVERYDAY USE!
