Unofficial medal, probably sold to Romanian veterans of the battle of Marasesti, 6 August to 3 September 1917. At Marasesti, the Romanian and Russian armies defeated a German offensive; nonetheless, after the Russian withdrawal from the war in early 1918, Romania was left isolated and forced to accept an unfavorable treaty with the Central Powers in May 1918. The medal is in extremely fine condition; on what is very likely the original ribbon.
