Romanos advanced through the ranks of the army during the reign of Emperor Leo VI the Wise, and eventually became an admiral in the Byzantine navy. With this command he "gently" usurped the imperial throne from Constantine VII and installed himself as the senior emperor. Constantine VII still continued to reside within the imperial palace and when Romanus I died in 944 CE, he'd return to the throne as sole emperor.
