Richard Ziegler (1891 Pforheim - 1992 ibid.) was one of the most important representatives of the New Objectivity and Expressionism. He studied at the Reuchlin Gymnasium in Pforzheim, before spending a year in Stratford-upon-Avon (Great Britain). Ziegler then studied philology (Germanistic) in Geneva, Greifswald and Heidelberg, graduating in 1919 in Heidelberg as Doctor of Philology (Dr. phil.). The artist had no formal training as painter, but started painting already in his childhood and at the age of 28 decided to dedicate himself solely to visual arts. After the First World War Ziegler began his artistic career experimenting with a range of techniques and styles. After traveling in Italy at the begin of the 1920s, he settled down in Berlin in 1925 working as free artist. During the following years Ziegler created book illustrations, woodcuts, etchings and oil paintings and also joined the famous "Novembergruppe". When the Nazis came into power, Ziegler left Germany still in 1933 and lived until 1937 on the Dalmatian island Korcula. In 1937 he moved to England where he stayed until the war was over. Ziegler settled down on Mallorca in 1963 and created there his "expressive-realistic" late works. The artist spent the last years of his life in his native town Pforzheim, where he was awarded with honorary citizenship on his 100th birthday. Between 1925 and 1946 Ziegler showed his works widely, in Berlin, Cologne and London. His later shows included one at the Leinster Fine Art Gallery in 1981 and shows in Berlin, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Calw and Pforzheim between the years 1987 and 1991. Calw is now home to the Ziegler Foundation.
