ABOUT THE AUTOGRAPH- Richard Conte signed the card in 1966. My Aunt and Uncle, who were persistent autograph hunters, and were on vacation in Miami, Florida. They spotted Conte on the set of "Tony Rome", which was filming at the Viscaya Museum and Gardens. He was sitting with some of the other actors in the movie (including Frank Sinatra, Gena Rowlands, Jill St. John and even Rocky Graziano, who had a small role in the movie. ABOUT RICHARD CONTERichard Conte (1910 – 1975) was born Nicolas Peter Conte in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was an American actor who appeared in more than 100 films from the 1940s through 1970s. His films include "I'll Cry Tomorrow," "Oceans 11" and "The Godfather." , His performance as Don Barzini in "The Godfather" (1972), is one of his most memorable roles. At the time the film was made, the director (Francis Ford Coppola) seriously considered him for the title role of Don Vito Corleone, a part that was eventually cast with Marlon Brando. Conte was first discovered by Elia Kazan in 1935. Kazan saw him working as a performing waiter at a Connecticut resort and offered him a scholarship at the esteemed Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. After appearing on Broadway, Conte signed a contract with 20th Century Fox and soon developed into one of the studio's most dependable leading man. Richard Conte played a variety of different roles but was most typically cast as a world-weary hero or a cynical gangster. Conte's career thrived during the Second World War, when many Hollywood actors were away in the military. After signing with Fox, he was promoted by the studio as the "New John Garfield." His movie debut was "Guadalcanal Diary" in 1943. During World War II, he appeared mostly as soldiers in war pictures. But after the war, he was cast in the studio's "film noir" crime dramas, including "13 Rue Madeleine" (1947),"Call Northside 777" (1948) and "House of Strange" (1949) where he played an wrongly imprisoned man who was exonerated by James Stewart. One of his best roles was as a trucker in "Thieves' Highway" (1949) Other films include: "The Sleeping City" (1950), "Under the Gun," (1951), The Blue Gardenia" (1953), "Highway Dragnet" (1954) and the film-noir classic "The Big Combo" (1955). He starred opposite Oscar winner Susan Hayward in "I'll Cry Tomorrow" (1956)In 1960, Conte joined Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. (among others) in the hit "Oceans 11" (1960) He portrayed Barrabas for Director George Stevens in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" in 1965. Frank Sinatra also cast the actor in two of his "Tony Rome " Rome detective films, including "Tony Rome" (1967) and "Lady in Cement" (1968) But it was "The Godfather" that most people remember. The late Stanley Kubrick considered it the greatest film of all time. Conte's role was as Don Corleone's rival, Don Barzini. Since his character was assassinated in the film, Conte didn't appear in the equally classic sequel. But he continued working in European films. The success of "The Godfather" led to his casting in a series of "mob" roles throughout the 1970s. He also did horror films, including 1973's "No Way Out," (with Alain Delon), "Evil Eye," "A Diary of a Murderess." and "Naked Exorcism."
