Description: Wowza. this 1968 retablo / ex voto has it all: a prostitute thanks the Virgin of Talpa, in Jalisco, for saving her from her pimp who came gunning for her, and she changes her life.My Spanish is rusty, like this retablo on a piece of sheet metal, but here is the approximate message: "Miraculous little virgin of Talpa, I give you infinite thanks for having freed me from being shot to death by a pimp [gets harder to read here] freed me from my devil and who [short version -- got me out of the something something, and the men something something I wanted to "leave this life of whoring" and the illegible something something] "for which I make this retablo. Guadalupe Nino" illegible month, then 1968.I lightened the second photo to make the subscript more legible. This is rusty, and darker than photo 2. Re: provenance, I have had this ex voto for about 20 years. And the image is of the woman sitting at a table in a saloon -- note the swinging doors and the word "cantina" over the doors -- when the pimp shoots at her, and the Virgin floating above them saves her, and she reforms her life. It's like a telenovela in one piece of painted metal! This measures 12 by 9 inches.
