REMINISCENCES OF FORTS SUMTER AND MOULTRIE - 1876 FIRST EDITION - FIRST SHOT

Description: REMINISCENCES OF FORTS SUMTER AND MOULTRIE IN 1860-1861 BY ABNER DOUBLEDAY Brevet Major General, U.S.A. RARE ACCOUNT OF A UNION OFFICER AT FORT SUMTER BEFORE AND DURING THE BOMBARDMENT - FIRST OFFICER TO FIRE A SHOT IN DEFENSE OF FORT SUMTER FIRST EDITION NEAR FINE CONDITION Original, Clean, Bright, Solidly Bound, Antique Book Frontispiece Illustration of Fort Sumter; Full Page Map of Charleston Harbor PUBLISHED BY HARPER & BROTHERS, NEW YORK, IN 1876 Abner Doubleday was an 1843 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a veteran of the Mexican War when he was assigned to Fort Moultrie in the summer of 1860. A captain of artillery, he served as second in command of the garrison at the historic fort when the curtain rose on the dramatic events leading to the outbreak of the War Between the States. Doubleday fired the first gun in defense of Fort Sumter when the fighting began. He was a keen and well-trained observer whose memoir of the federal garrison's efforts to carry out its mission is as fresh and useful to the reader today as it was in 1876, when it was first published. He had a front seat at the opening action of the Civil War. General Doubleday presents a unique account of the events, from the Union viewpoint, leading up to and including the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, which ignited the American Civil War. His first-person details from inside the garrison are hard to find elsewhere. A staunch Unionist, he recalls being the only officer of the garrison in favor of the election of Lincoln. His account provides both an account of these early events as well as a criticism of the inaction of his own commanders and higher echelons in preventing the war. He went on to become a Major General and to fight for the Union at Chancellorsville, Antietam, Gettysburg and other battles.
