Description: "Florentine Lace" Sterling Silver Flatware by Reed & Barton THIS LISTING IS FOR 42 PIECES OF STERLING SILVER FLATWARE ~ SERVICE FOR 8 ~ ~ IT COMES WITH MID-CENTURY MODERN WOOD STORAGE CHEST ~ My parents bought me this sterling set when I got married in 1968. I haven't used it in many years, as I am long since divorced and don't entertain like I did when I was married. My lifestyle is very casual so I use my favorite stainless steel flatware instead. I'm now in my mid-70s so it's time to downsize my household, including this gorgeous sterling flatware. It's in great condition, as I take good care of my pretty things. Somewhere along the line, two of the salad forks and one of the soup spoons got lost ... probably during a party. But it's easy to buy individual pieces to replace those three missing pieces. Here's a bit of history of Reed & Barton and the Florentine Lace pattern: “Florentine Lace” by Reed & Barton is one of the most beautifully ornamented and dramatic flatware patterns that the company has ever produced. This American made sterling silver pattern debuted in 1951, and was designed and produced in Taunton, Massachusetts. It is inspired by the grandeur and exuberance of Baroque art, characterized by natural themes that incorporate the sensuousness, drama, and richness of intricate detail that seeks to evoke emotion with intricate splendor. This pattern, with its ornately detailed resplendence, is no exception. Decorated with carefully carved floral designs, this sterling silver flatware set is a study in the glory of nature. As one of the most prolific homegrown sterling silver producers, Reed & Barton was founded in 1824, and remained a primary maker of American sterling silverware until its final closure in 2015. During its nearly 200 year tenure, the company produced dozens of unique patterns, receiving government commissions both internationally and domestically, and remains one of the most well known sterling silver makers in history, and its beautiful creations can be found woven through American history, and can be found in homes illustrious and moderate alike, including many pieces that have made their way into the White House. Stylistically, "Florentine Lace" is a lovely example of the artistry of silversmithing. The handle is beautifully shaped, and it balances well in the hand. On one end, it is decorated with scrolls, leaves, blossoms, and flowers. It has 14 individual piercings that give a dramatic three dimensional look and feel to this remarkable silver pattern. Below that, the tapered stem is flanked by a simple thread design, then the handle flares to meet the shoulders of the fork or spoon, meeting the bowl with elegant, curving flourishes. The intricacy of the embellishments along the neck and at the bottom of the stems maintain pleasing symmetry amongst the pieces.
