Description: Complete with its original, sterling silver mechanical pencil, this rare and very fine notepad is engraved with a lovely script monogram: "FdeVT." The quality of the piece indicates that the owner was wealthy, and the particle "de" in their name may indicate that they were of a noble family. The notepad was made by the prestigious Massachusetts silversmith Reed & Barton which began operations in 1824 and used this "eagle, R, lion" hallmark until 1928. Other marks are "23" on the gold interior and "F" in a shield on the pencil. Both the case and the pencil are marked "STERLING." The case has a slit at the bottom edge to facilitate opening it. It's spring hinged and it snaps firmly shut. The mechanical pencil works. The paper may be original, or may not. The pencil is firmly held by two golden clasps and it has a ring at its end to which a chain could possibly be attached. No dents, light scratches, some tarnish. Combined weight of case and pencil (without the paper): 46.5 grams The karat of the interior gold is not marked.
