Description: Original work by Russian artist Yuliya Makarova. Working titles: Red Scroll, Red and blue Medium: acrylic paint with on unstretched canvas roll with red margin, dimensions 54" x 64" Years Completed: 2009-2011 Relatively modest in scale compared to the other giants produced by the artist, the scroll was featured for some time at the Kipton art, New York based gallery back in the day. I experiment with intuitive and spontaneous mark-making, gestural tendencies, a variety of mediums, surfaces, textures, and the size of the pictures, often times operating outside the frame. Using a limited color palette, and freely associated icons, I try to uncover a personal coding system of symbols and characters, mimicking the abstract and complex patterns of sensations, affections, and generally, sensible influences. There is the recurring concept of instant gratification, here and now as opposed to then and there. Being bilingual, I am interested in the figure of speech rather than language, which often creates unnecessary barriers, boundaries, and limitations. Any grumpy Russian woman could be an abstract expressionist in ten easy steps: 1. Right of birth is the must. Russia is your Motherland, or any ex-Soviet Republic, it is not ethnicity but language. 2. go off the frame 3. Kill the white space; leave the gaps though, as it is in the gaps 4. Political/social commentary is dated. Face it: you cannot stop hunger in Africa, and save the world. 5. Do not bring your own traumatic experience into critique to defend your work. Tell them: Trust me on that: I am the most tragic person in the room. Period. The latter is literally and metaphorically speaking. To be said with heavy Russian accent for designated effect. Having a fashionable nervous breakdown to enlighten your work is optional. Every other person in the program already tried with temporal success. You can be hit by divine inspiration otherwise lighting strike for instance. Real life experiences may indeed inform your work; consequently, slightly neurotic charge is noted. 6. It is never about the boy. While an individual piece could be inspired by a beautiful model, the body of work in its entity remains feminine. 7. The work is never the same; the work is ever evolving, ever changing. What was an absolute truth back then, for example, dont mix vodka with beer/wine is still the same. What was a relative truth is different now. If the latter is the same then your work is Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of it. 8. Dont ask, I wont tell: how the work functions, what the work is about. If it doesnt stop your heart, move on. Take it or leave it. Whats the truth? I am not in the business of writing textbooks on quantum mechanics, my grandfather was. And it was physics for God sake. 9. Accidents happen. Whoa! Eliminate planned/controlled aspect of image making between conception and realization. Knowing how to make it/knowledge of technique is a plus. 10. Marriage of line, shape and color is preferable. Palette-wise think Rothko: "There's only one thing I fear in life, my friend, one day the black will swallow the red.
