What I have observed over the last few years of repairing hundreds of these radios: These units suffer from capacitor plague. The electrolytic capacitors are prone to failure at this age. There is always atleast 1 and usually 5-10 leaking acid thereby damaging circuit traces and solder pads. This is why these radios are notorious for failing. The leaking capacitors eventually cause the radio to malfunction or die and makes repairs for even well equipped professionals difficult and time consuming. Without human intervention these radios will be nearing 100% failure rate over the next decade mainly due to capacitor failure. For this reason I replace all these capacitors on all these radios I service effectively giving the radios a new lease on life.
