Description: RATS, LICE AND HISTORY: Being a Study in Biography, which, after Twelve Preliminary Chapters Indispensible for the Preparation of the Lay Reader, Deals with the Life History of TYPHUS FEVER, by Hans Zinsser. Little and Brown, 1935. 301 pp. Hardback, lacking dust jacket. FIRST EDITION, FIFTH PRINTING. In exceptional condition. Spine is strong, covers clean and in good condition, corners generally sharp. Top edge dust stained. Internally CLEAN, except for previous owner's name (crossed out) on front free end paper. A very nice copy. HANS ZINSSER was a physician at Columbia University in New York. He was a giant among microbiologists in his time, and Rats, Lice and History was his magnum opus of his favorite subject, typhus fever and the typhus bacterium. This book was a BEST SELLER (8th on the NY Times Bestseller list) back in the day (1935). Zinsser also authored a classic medical textbook (Zinsser Bacteriology), an autobiography (As I Remember Him: The Biography of RS) and a book of poetry (Spring, Summer, and Autumn). Rats, Lice and history is similar in structure to Laurence Sterne's book, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman," a comical fictional autobiography, in which the protagonist isn't even born until half-way through the book. A must read for any student or professional in the bacterial/microbiological arena. Continental USA bidders only, please. Buyer pays USPS Media Mail shipping. Book will be shipped well-packed in a box. See my other auctions for additional rare and unusual books. Thank you for your interest.
