Description: JVC CP-5000U Video Cassette RecorderPlays Beta Tapes This is a historic piece of video equipment from the mid 1970's. Manufactured by the Victor Company of Japan (JVC) who was the first company to come out with the VHS tapes HR-3000U in 1976. This model however must pre-date the VHS technology because it uses the larger Betamax recorder tapes (SL-5400) developed by Sony. JVC won the technology battle and we all have shelves of VHS tapes. I have had this unit about 20 years and it worked well when I watched Beta tapes with it about 10 years ago. While in storage it developed a problem. The unit powers on, but the controls seem to be stuck in Rewind. When powered on the tape motor comes on in the Rewind mode. The stop button on the control panel buttons is illuminated. There is a repair sticker on the back of the unit from 1991 and also on the board that seems to control the panel. The VCR weighs 52 lbs and has wooden panels with a teak grain. The dimensions are about 18 X 21 X 6 inches. I will probably ship it in a 24 X 24 X 12 box. Selling it "as is" with buyer expected to pay postage both ways in case of a return.
