R.A., Meritorious Service Medal (G.VI.), impressed named 64409 Q.M. SJT. W.F. PORTER. R.A. Medals are court mounted for wear and come with massive file of copied Boer War and WW1 service papers, medal rolls, silver war badge roll & pension extract.Meritorious Service Medal, Army Order 192 of October 1944.Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, Army Order 90 of 1906.Warrant Officer William Frederick Porter was born 22/9/1868 at Ipswich, Suffolk. A porter by trade, he enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Greater Yarmouth on 1/11/1887 and was given the service number 64409. Posted to D Battery 19/2/1889 which became O Battery 1/7/89. Posted to H Battery 12/10/89, posted Q Battery 1/12/1894 and served India 19/2/1889 - 4/11/95.He served in South Africa 19/12/1899 - 12/5/1900, until invalided home on 21/4/1900. Q Battery saw intense service and Major Phipps-Hornby, Sergeant Parker, Gunner Lodge, and Driver Glasock were each awarded the VC for acts of magnificent heroism at the famous engagement at Sanna's Post.Promoted sergeant 10/2/1900, transferred to R.H.A. Depot 21/4/1900. To School of Gunnery 19/12/1900 as Sgt. Instructor. Company Sergeant Major School of Gunnery 1/6/1904. Promoted to Laboratory Quarter Master Sergeant 1/8/1907 and discharged 31/01/1908.Prior to WW1, he spent 5 years working for the Government Health Insurance Office. He enlisted on the 10/10/1914 and was given the new service number 49393. He was initially enlisted as a Battery Quarter Master Sergeant, however this was rectified to Warrant Officer Class 2. He served in England from 10/10/1914 - 1/3/1918 when he was medically discharged and awarded a Silver War Badge. He served with the 192nd Battery, 5th Battery Reserve Brigade and Territorial Artillery Training School as the R.Q.M.S. On discharging, he returned to the Government Health Insurance Office.Unfortunately, he later suffered the loss of 2 of his 3 sons during WW2, who were Warrant Supply Officer John Leslie Porter Royal Navy, who was killed in action whilst aboard H.M.S. Glorious 9/6/1940, who was sunk by the German Pocket Battleship Scharnhorst.His other son, Wing Commander Eric Frederick Porter, who was commanding officer of 156 Squadron (Lancaster) Bomber Command, was killed in action 25/2/1944, Germany, whose plane was shot down by a German night fighter.William Porter died in September 1953 at Folkstone, Kent.
