Description: Rare Pair c. 1790 American Ingot or Puddle Cast Iron Andirons Hessian Grenadier Soldiers This is a VERY RARE pair of American Cast Iron Andirons from the late 18th century, Ca 1790. The design features Hessian soldiers as grenadiers and are made of cast iron. These andirons are a rare find and would be a great addition to any collection. The pair are perfect for use in fireplaces, mantels and other architectural and garden settings.Very rare, I could only find a similar pair in the Huntington Library and Museum Folk Art Collection. Found in Woodstock, CT. Dimensions Ea:12.25 in. H x 6.5 in. W x approx. 12 in. DWeight, Pair, unpacked: 15 lbs., 4 oz. Condition: AS IS. Castor Iron Billet bars missing from vertical section at ends. Can be propped up with fire proof bricks for use or restored. Traces of silver paint.Else, very good with wear commensurate with age and use. Please See Photos. “Puddling” was one of several processes developed in the second half of the 18th century in Great Britain for producing bar iron from pig iron without the use of charcoal. It gradually replaced the earlier charcoal-fueled process, conducted in a finery forge. The process originated in Great Britain in the 1780s and soon spread to the colonies in North America.
