Description: Good afternoon from Congers, NY. I was recently in a house that belonged to a long time member of the Metropolitan Opera Company in NY. This obelisk came from his estate. Thank you for looking in and happy eBaying!The obelisk is just shy of 24" tall. Just shy of 6" per side. Weighs in at just shy of 10 Lbs. Plaster of Paris or similar "stage materials". "SPQR" ("Senātus Populusque Rōmānus" : The Senate and the Roman people) on two sides, "Grand / Opening / 1966" on two sides. Losses as shown in the images. The black felt on the base covers a hole in the center, both to save space and weight. I don't know if this was sold as an opening night souvenir, or if it was given to cast and crew. I do know that the Opening Night was Sept 16, 1966, and the production was "Antony & Cleopatra", by Samuel Barber. The production was not well received and was dropped after only 8 performances (later it was revised and re released in 1975).Can't find another one anywhere for sale or in a collection.
