Description: Up for auction is an extremely rare, one-of-a-kind photo of John Steinbeck with his close friend and fellow author, Nathaniel Benchley, taken circa 1942 by his friend and Nathaniel Benchley's father, Robert, a humorist, best know for his work as a newspaper columnist and movie actor. This photo was probably taken in New York. The photo was printed in 1994, directly from the negative. This negative and 17 others were sold to the John Steinbeck Library in Salinas, California, and, as part of the sale, 18 8" x 10" prints were produced and given to the seller by the Library. The print has some small imperfections as the negative was not in perfect condition. I purchased these 18 images directly from the seller who is a long-standing member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA). Over the weeks ahead, I will be auctioning off the majority of these photos from my personal collection. To support the above details, I have included a couple of items in the images. One is the letter from the John Steinbeck Library regarding their acquisition of the negatives and the other is the description included when I purchased the photos years ago. The photo has two very small creases in the white margins in the top left corner and in the bottom right corner. I will be shipping the photo sealed in a plastic sleeve in a photo mailer between two sheets of corrugate. The photo will be professionally packed to ensure its safe transit. Given the value of the photo, a signature will be required upon delivery.
