Description: Sale!!! Mega RARE! Unique!!! Dennis STOCK - James Dean, Times Square, New York City, 1955 Old Authentic Original Drawing Offset print Beautiful Famous photo! Iconic!!! Format of the Proof: 12.9 cm x 17.8 cm The contrasting print, very bright, with a beautiful sharp definition, in dense black, all enhanced by the glossy protective varnish, has an absolutely remarkable sharpness and rendering. Old process and technique for offset printing Photogravure made from the original photograph of photographer Dennis Stock Professional manual proofing done individually which was used exclusively for validation and coloring. This unpublished Cromalin-type photoengraving proof was found at the home of a former art photoengraver in the depths of an assembly workshop, preciously preserved in a flat envelope and protected from light. Although it is old from 2000 with its 23 years of age, it has remained in a good state of conservation. On the back there are minimal traces of dirt and marks due to the manipulations of the printer. On the other hand, the front is intact, in excellent condition and has a very beautiful shine. This once unique style of proofing from a traditional old fashioned fine art print era has totally disappeared these days being replaced by all digital. The colors of these manual proofs of yesteryear, carried out individually by professionals, were more beautiful, richer and incredibly brilliant, they have become rare, identical to a photograph. These old manual proofs are no longer used today, they were used once when photoengraving was still an art and not an industry. It should be remembered that at that time the usual average time to finalize a photoengraving work varied from a few days to several weeks in order to obtain a faithful rendering as close as possible to the original photograph of the artist, with many round trips. between the client and the photoengraver. This magnificent hard-to-find proof is a treasure trove of old-fashioned printing techniques that are no longer around today. Now part of the history and heritage of the printing press of yesteryear. Dennis Stock signs this photograph in 1955, James Dean in the rain, walking cold, his collar up in Times Square. This image is one of the most famous in his repertoire, very quickly it becomes essential and iconic of the 20th century, unforgettable it then goes around the world at the time and still today. This shot during a melancholy and solitary walk of the young actor who died the same year, contributes to the creation of a myth, by immortalizing forever this rebellious, tormented and fragile boy that was James Dean. "In 1955, I wanted to do a series of photos of James Dean because I had been very impressed by his acting and I thought it was important to transcribe the character's energy. »Dennis Stock The decor is not due to chance, but what would this photo be without the rain which forces James to walk slightly bent, his head tucked into his shoulders, New York, Times Square, Broadway serves as a theater for him, a theater in reality everywhere where he is, he doesn't play, he lives his life and in front of the public, with Dennis Stock's camera, the boundary between dream and reality vanishes. It is no coincidence that he strolls, a Chesterfield cigarette in the corner of his lips, in Times Square, he has crossed it hundreds of times. In the wet street, the way Dennis Stock uses the puddle to somehow double the figure of his hero, James seems to have emerged between the skyscrapers of New York which fade into the mists and vapors of the background. , while the actor, due to his stocky constitution, gains in size. Stock that day knows how to translate with a stroke of genius, a giant with hunched shoulders. James Dean and Dennis Stock met in the winter of 1954, during an evening at Nicholas Ray's, when he had just finished "East of Eden". Five days later the actor invites the photographer to his home for a private screening of the film. Stock impressed by the performance of James, asks him the possibility of photographing it, it is then that a great chapter of the life of Stock opens. In 1955, the young actor and the photographer, friends recently and following the request of the magazine LIFE, Stock realizes a report on James Dean in New York and in Indiana, at the place where the star lived his youth, the meeting is a farewell to the farm of its origins, which James will never see again. This photographic series is one of the last, becoming a testament, a few days later James Dean died in an automobile accident. Fairmount marked it and New York turned into a demigod. Without realizing it, Stock then becomes a visual biographer illustrating the life of someone who would go on to be a star, an icon and a myth. Very ahead of his time, Stock does not hesitate to reframe very closely, which sometimes gives blurring effects, he allows himself to capture those he photographs in their environments with a whole game of shapes. His stunning photographs indicate the degree of intimacy he has managed to have with his subjects, he captures them on stage, at the exit of a bus, in a dressing room, in the street or even at home. Gifted, technically virtuoso, Dennis Stock is one of the greatest photographers of celebrity portraits, within the Magnum agency. His photography is the image of a refined style both of the character, in the relationships with beings, in the technical mastery, always clear and structured. His photos have a quality rarely present elsewhere. “Those I choose to photograph are always people who have decided to live differently to better analyze the conventional existence that we lead on a daily basis. And it is the fascination of seeing them continue to live as they see fit that constantly arouses the desire to take out my camera” Dennis Stock “I've had the privilege of seeing most of my life through the lens of my cameras, which has illuminated my journey. »Dennis Stock Dennis Stock (1928-2010) American photographer, born in New York. At age 17, he left home to join the United States Navy. In 1947 he learned photography alongside Gjon Milii, becoming his assistant at Life magazine. He won the competition for the first prize for young photographers. Spotted very quickly by Robert Capa who guessed in the young photographer an ability to grasp the world of stars, he was then the photographer in the flourishing Hollywood of the 1950s. He joined the Magnum agency in 1951 evoking the spirit of America through his iconic portraits of Hollywood stars. In front of her lens, great American stars: Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Katherine Hepburn, Charlton Heston and especially James Dean. After the death of James Dean, of whom he was a close friend, the photographer left California to devote himself to his passion for music. From 1957 to 1960 Stock photographed the portraits of jazz musicians, he then photographed the biggest names in jazz: Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Gene Krupa, Sidney Bechet, Bill Crow, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald who are immortalized in his collection of photographs "Jazz Street" published in 1960. In 1968 Stock left the Magnum agency to create Visual Objectifs, a film production company by shooting several documentaries. At the end of the 1960s, he became interested in the hippie community in California, visiting music festivals, fascinated by these "outcasts" whom he got to know. The photographer presents them as free and respectable beings, in search of spirituality. Then, in the 1970s, after making several films, the photographer, based in Woodstock, switched to color and published numerous works devoted to both natural and urban landscapes. He emphasizes with his latest shots the beauty of nature and the landscape through the details. In the 1990s, he returned to his urban origins to explore the modern architecture of big cities. He died in Florida at age 81. Old-fashioned Photogravure and the Cromalin proof: The Photograver produced with special cameras from the original shot of the photographer of the films (typons). Before any printing, the Photograver carried out on a test press an original and unique analog manual print here of the CROMALIN type (Dupont de Nemours) obtained by superimposing 2 duotone films with the application of a protective varnish. This is what was called a photoengraving proof or contractual proof, it anticipated the final rendering and the conformity of the work. After validation by the artist, the rights holders or the agency, the Photoengraver then sent all: Films and Proofs to the printer for the production of the work. It was an essential tool and was used by the Printer as a reference for the adjustments of its duotone inking units, to faithfully respect the appearance and control the colors during the final offset printing of the work in the machine. When everything was in order, the customer signed the proof which then became contractual, the customer's approval committed the printer to obtain an identical result for all the prints he had to produce. This proof, which cannot be found today, was only intended for the printing press of the past, and was never found in the commercial circuit. After their use, they had to be returned to the artist, agency or rights holders, very often they were archived for the time of the reproductions, then destroyed. This is a survivor. “At the frenetic pace in which our lives go, the still image has become an imperious necessity. »Dennis Stock Sale as is, no return.
