Description: Incredible rare first edition book from 1937...Attractive Clothes, How to Make Buy and Wear Them by Frances Consalus and William Dooley. According to the website bookfinder.com, this is the only original hardback copy from 1937 that exists for sale in the world. It is an ex-library book, but the many remnants of that have been removed and what's left is only on the inside cover and first intro pages and outro pages, and the title page (see photos). Digging around on the internet I was able to find out that Consalus got her teaching degree in 1904 and was a high school teacher teaching sewing in NYC at Washington Irving HS from at least 1907 through 1921. There's more to her life than just that, but that was the only portion I could find. This book is considered an entry level introduction into the garment making/garment industry. It has an incredible amount of photos and diagrams in it. In 1940 she, with Mr. Dooley and two other colleagues, wrote an intermediate level book in the series entitled "Distinctive Clothes, How to Select and Make Them". Also in 1940 she wrote a book entitled "How to Make Fashion Clothes" which was a dressmaking guide with an illustrated tutorial. These books are incredible reservoirs of knowledge about clothes making and clothes in general that anyone in the industry or interested in getting into the industry would love to have on their shelf. The wisdom from the ages is incalculable. My book's covers have a few smudges, a small crease on back cover, but overall in good shape. Top and bottom edges of pages are stain/smudge free (see photos). Side edge of pages has some light staining and foxing. Inside back covers have some aging and staining. Ex-Libris but with minimal negative impact...numbering on spine, stamp on inside and back covers, stamp and numbering on title page. Check out pocket and other things pulled from inside cover, paper residue left behind. Interior pages are nearly pristine: no writings, no underlinings, no notations, no staining, no smudges....words and pictures jump off the pages.
